Requirements for the Undergraduate Major (Plan of Study)

PREREQUISITES: English 106 or 108; AUSL/ENGL 227, and one 200-level literature course from those offered in the core. For admission to the major a 2.5 GPA in courses in prerequisite and background sections is required. All professional writing majors must have a minor outside the Department of English. The purpose of this minor should be to help establish one's credentials to write in a technical area or specialized subject. Students should consult with their advisors.

A. Background Writing Courses (9 credits)

  • ENGL 203    Introduction to Research in Professional Writing (3 credits)
  • ENGL 205    Introduction to Creative Writing (3 credits)
  • ENGL 306    Introduction to Professional Writing (3 credits)

B. Advanced Writing Courses (21 credits from either Group 1 or Group 2)

Group 1--Writing and Publishing

  • ENGL 309  Computer-aided Publishing (3 cr.)

One of the following required (courses listed in recommended sequence)

  • ENGL 488  Internship in Professional Writing (3 cr.; prerequisite: 3.0 major GPA plus 12 cr. hrs. of writing courses 300 level or higher, maximum of 6 credits can be applied to major)
  • ENGL 515  Advanced Professional Writing (3 cr.; prerequisite: ENGL 309)

Options (choose 15 credits)

  • ENGL 406  Review Writing (3 cr.)
  • ENGL 407, 409, 507, 508, 509  (3-6 cr.; these courses repeatable for credit; observe prerequisites) 
  • ENGL 419  Multimedia Writing OR
    ENGL 420  Business Writing OR 
    ENGL 421  Technical Writing (3 cr.)
  • ENGL 424  Writing for the Computer Industry (3 cr.)
  • ENGL 470  Theories of Rhetoric and Composition (3 cr.)
  • ENGL 488  Internship in Professional Writing (3-6 cr.; prerequisite:  3.0 major GPA plus 12 cr. hrs. of writing courses 300  level or higher; maximum of 6 credits may be applied to  major)
  • ENGL 515  Advanced Professional Writing (3 cr.; if not taken above; prerequisite: ENGL 309; maximum of 6 cr. hrs. can be applied to major)
  • Up to two ENGL courses at 300-level or higher (3-6 cr.)
    Up to two COM courses in Writing or Journalism at 400-level (3-6 cr.)

Group 2--Technical Writing

  • ENGL 309  Computer-aided Publishing (3 cr.)
  • ENGL 421  Technical Writing OR 
    ENGL 424 Writing for the Computer-Industry (3 cr.)
  • ENGL 515  Advanced Professional Writing (3 cr.; prerequisite: ENGL 309)

    COM 453  Reporting of Science News (3 cr.; prerequisite: ENGL 309)
